Special Features of Our School

Beautiful Site
Woodleigh School is nestled between bush on two sides and a view to
Mt Egmont on the third.
We are fortunate to have landscaped grounds with attractive gardens, groves
of shade trees and outdoor seating areas. All buildings are well presented,
tastefully painted, open to the sun and furnished to a high level.

All classrooms, the library, staff and administration areas have been updated with facilities second to none.  Our growing art collection is hung to be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

The Board of Trustees is pupil and staff focused – the curriculum, and  resources
for learning are the areas of choice for funding along with professional develop-
ment for staff members.

Safe and Secure Environment
Children need to feel safe if they are to be happy and make good progress.
All staff operate in a consistent way to implement the Woodleigh Way.

  This consists of:
  -  a school-wide Positive Discipline Plan in which children are encouraged to
take responsibility for their own behaviour
  -   a Peer Mediation programme where all children are taught to solve
their problems through working out issues with their peers.

By these means, we are able to insist on high levels of behaviour.

Full Curriculum Coverage
We strive to ensure that all areas of the curriculum are covered.
Children need the stimulation of variety, a chance to excel in
areas of strength, and the challenge of working hard in areas needing attention.

Outdoor Classroom in the Bush
The school owns an area of adjacent bush which is being developed as an
outdoor classroom – wonderful for science, language, art etc.

Library
This is the hub of the school.  We have a fully computerised library with each
child having their own bar code.  Generous funding allows a top-rate book
stock which meets the needs and interests of the children and staff.

Parents Assembly
Every Wednesday morning we hold a full School Assembly.
If your child's class is presenting the assembly, you are invited to attend.
Twice a term we hold a parents Assembly, all parents and caregivers are
welcome to join us, at these times we sing, present awards, share
achievements and deal with positive school-wide matters.

Peer Mediation
High expectations for behaviour are set out in our school and our Behaviour
Plan, the Woodleigh Way. This helps children to be responsible for their
own actions.

To further assist the children to deal with conflict or problems, they are all taught
the skills of Peer Mediation.  These skills enable children to learn and practice
non-violent, thoughtful ways of dealing with these issues.

Buddy Classes
We want our pupils to feel safe and happy at school.
To encourage this, all classes have a Buddy Class so that older and younger
children are matched up. They meet regularly to read to each other, share their
work and help each other.  This encourages a caring attitude by the senior
pupils and enables the younger children to have friends amongst the “big” children.

Musical Opportunites
All children should have the opportunity to have their lives enriched by music.
At Woodleigh all classes sing and we enjoy singing as a school at assembly.

In addition the following opportunities are available:

* Senior Choir
* Recorder groups
* Social and folk dancing

As well, all children from age 7 on are taught to read music and
play the recorder.

skill development and learning to play fair as part of a team.  All classes
participate in phys-ed programmes and team games.
