Danielle van de Donk winner gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
United had looked set to continue to their first point since being marketed into the Barclays FA Women’s Super League although the champions finally discovered the breakthrough.
Former Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra and England boss Phil Neville were one of the audience at Leigh Sports Village.
Since recovering from the cruciate ligament injury that ruled her out of the World 25, england celebrity Jordan Nobbs created her first start for Arsenal.
United needed a golden chance to open the scoring in the 15th minute when Jessica Sigsworth’s cross picked six yards from goal but she could not direct her header.
She ventured to life, and star striker Vivianne Miedema was quiet, although arsenal took their time getting moving.
United goalkeeper Mary Earps was equal to this challenge rescuing Miedema’s follow-up attempt with her feet and keeping the header of the Dutchwoman out.
Arsenal started the second half as they ended the first but, they created one of the greatest chances of the match when the shackles did break.
Jane Ross was one off with Manuela Zinsberger but the’keeper saved.
Three minutes later Earps made another excellent save to deny Kim Little and it was.
When Hayley Ladd fired wide, united had one last chance but the visitors, and chiefly Miedema, laid siege to Earps’ goal.
Miedema volleyed over, headed wide, hit a pole and watched one cleared off the line until substitute Van de Donk applied the last touch as the ball ricocheted around the goalmouth.
