Tokyo 2020: Olympic marathon and race walks moved to Sapporo over heat fears

The race and marathon walking at the Tokyo Olympics of the summer have now been transferred to Sapporo – 800km into the north because of its states.
Measures to fight the heat in the capital, such as improved water and shade sprays, have been trialled at evaluation events this summer.
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said athlete welfare wasat the heart of modifications.
Sapporo can be up to six degrees cooler than Tokyo in peak summer.
International Association of Athletics Federations president Lord Coe said:Giving athletes the ideal platform to their performances within the environment they are in is fundamental to all significant events, and well work together with the organisers to make the best marathon and race walk paths for next years Olympic Games.
